Vilonia claims 5A state softball championship

FAYETTEVILLE — Buggy Lyons' three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth Friday led Vilonia to the 5A girls state softball championship with a 5-2 victory over Paragould at Bogle Park.

The Lady Eagles (28-4) trailed 2-1 going into the fifth when they tied the score on a throwing error, then put runners at the corners on a bloop infield single. Lyons, the MVP of the tournament, drove the ball over the fence in left for the decisive margin over the Lady Rams (27-3).

Sydney Wader (16-3) pitched a five-hitter for the victory.

Vilonia was making its second straight appearance in the  championship game, losing 5-2 last year to White Hall.
