BRADLEY — Mount Vernon-Enola’s girls took command from the beginning Thursday and had too much for Viola in the first round of the girls Class A basketball tournament here.
The Lady Warhawks (33-3), the third-place team from Region 3, easily defeated Viola, the second-place team from Region 2, 57-37.
MV-Enola moves into Friday’s 1 p.m. quarterfinal against Acorn, which upset Mulberry in the first round.
The Lady Warhawks quickly put the lead in double digits, racing to a 13-3 first-quarter lead and 28-13 at the half. After MV-Enola expanded that lead to 53-27 in the fourth quarter, coach Freeman Isaacs substituted freely.
Shanna Smith led the Lady Warhawks with 14 points, nine in the first half. Katherine Bartley had 10 and Katie McNinch added eight.
MARMADUKE — Parkers Chapel, the third-place team from the South Region, took a 58-39 victory over Conway Christian in the first round of the AA tournament.
The CCS boys, the No. 2 team from the West Region, were making their first appearance in a state basketball tournament sanctioned by the Arkansas Activities Association.
The Eagles ended their season at 12-17.
