Millsaps hands Hendrix women first defeat

JACKSON, Miss. Millsaps handed Hendrix's women their first defeat Saturday, 81-78, in overtime in the team's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener.

A turnover in the final seconds of regulation helped the Majors force overtime with the score tied at 71.

The Warriors fall to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in SCAC action, while Millsaps improves to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play.

Neither team could secure a dominant advantage during the first half as there were seven lead changes. The Warriors clung to a 39-34 lead at the break. The second half was no different as the two teams swapped leads seven more times during the next 20 minutes.

Chelsey White's layup with 1:29 left in regulation to make it 71-71 and knot the game for the ninth time. Lindsay Merritt pulled down a rebound and gave the Warriors possession with 0:26 ticks left, however Millsaps came up with a steal as time expired. The Majors struck first in overtime and held on to their lead to reach the final verdict.

Hendrix was led by junior forward Christina Byler with 23 points, while White scored 19 on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Samantha Clark added four assists and Amanda Morris led the team with six steals.

The Hendrix women host conference rival Rhodes at 7 p.m. Monday at Grove Gymnasium. The Game will not count in the league standings.

MEN

The Warriors opened with a 3-pointer from Michael Bertrand and never looked back in a 73-61 victory over the defending SCAC tourney champs.

Hendrix rolled to 5-1 with its fifth-straight win and improves to 1-0 in SCAC action, while Millsaps falls to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in league play.

The Warriors controlled the pace during the first half and stretched their advantage to 33-24 at the break. Hendrix never let up during the second half led by at least 10 points for over 14 minutes to end the game.

Conway's Ammon Martin scored 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and three of four from the free-throw line. Ryan Wible scored 13 points, while senior forward David Foley added 10 points to the mix. Janson Hightower added nine assists. Senior forward Andrew King had nine points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
