Last modified at 12:03 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 1997
WEST PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) -- Eight students were wounded, some critically, in barrage of gunfire in the lobby of a western Kentucky high school just before classes began today.
The students were taking part in a daily prayer circle at Heath High School when another student apparently opened fire, WKYX radio reported.
The suspect was arrested immediately after the shooting, said Karen McCuiston, a spokeswoman for the McCracken County school district.
Eight students were reported admitted at hospitals in nearby Paducah.
''Some are very critical,'' said Ruth Roberts, a nursing supervisor of Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, where four students had been admitted.
At Western Baptist Hospital, four students were being treated, including a boy who was taken into emergency surgery, said spokeswoman Bonnie Shrock.
Heath High School, a 5-year-old school just west of Paducah, has an enrollment of 550 students in grades nine through 12. Classes were dismissed for the day as distressed parents arrived.
''There's a lot of parents. They're scared,'' said a neighbor, Carlene Leigh. ''Something like this is a real surprise. ... We're a close-knit community."
