PINE BLUFF (AP) An off-duty Pine Bluff police sergeant on her way to work struck and killed a 15-year-old girl in a car crash officers describe as a "tragic accident."

Arkansas State Police investigators will examine what happened to cause Patrol Sgt. Megan Streussnig-Miller to hit Samia Akins with her 1997 Chevrolet Camaro. An initial report says two other girls ran across the four-lane road Streussnig-Miller was driving on Friday night and Akins ran after them.

Officers say Akins, wearing dark clothes in a poorly lit area, gave Streussnig-Miller no time to break or avoid her. Akins died later that night at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Police say Streussnig-Miller, 39, remains on active duty as troopers investigate the crash.
