75 years ago

(1933)

Ben H. Spencer, day lecturer of Toronto, Canada, will deliver an address at the First Baptist Church. His subject will be "Canada Dry and Canada Wet." The lecture will be free and the public is invited to attend.

The first meeting of the week of prayer being observed by the Woman's Missionary Society of the First Methodist Church was held at the church. Mrs. H.A. Daughter presided and Mrs. J.W. Campbell gave the devtional. Other appearing on the program were Mrs. J.W. House, Mrs. Russell Baker, Mrs. C.C. Calhoun and Mrs. J.H. Reynolds. A special feature of the meeting was a gift shower for Mrs. Crichlow. Mary Virginia Robins, dressed in a gypsy costume, brought in the gifts and presented them to Mrs. Crichlow. The gifts filled five baskets. During the social hour, Mrs. S.C. Smith and Mrs. J.W. Workman presided at the table and tea, wafers, mints and salted nuts were served.

(1958)

University of Arkansas football coach Frank and Mrs. Broyles became parents of twin girls. They already were parents of four boys. The girls were named Linda Ruth and Elizabeth Ann.

25 years ago

(1983)

Cub Scout Pack 366 of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints held a meeting at the church. A skit entitled "All's Well That Haunts Well" was presented by Kevin Spradlin, Craig Wright, Lem Boylston and Harold Jr. John Davidson, Scout committee chairman, conducted the meeting.

(1998)

The famous 7foottall Vacuum Cleaner Hospital gorilla was back to great passerby on Harkrider Street. The gorilla was stolen early this summer. Then, last month he showed up again standing right in front of the store door. He was in pretty rouch shape and it would cost too much to repair him. Another mechanical gorilla had been ordered, but until then, the olf familiar face wouold stand guard outside the "hospital" a little faded, a little rusty, but nevertheless, back on the job.

A group of women from Woodland Heights Baptist Church published a cookbook, "O Taste and See that the Lord is Good" containing 569 recipes collected from church members. The cookbook committee members included Camillia Cox, Becky Ellis, Katie Ellis, Rhonda Fowler, Donna Gober, Wanda Landers, Helen McKissack and Julie Stewart.
