POTTSVILLE -- Led by freshman Josh Spradlin and his sophomore brother, Joseph, the Conway Wampus Cats team experienced a cold, wet, and muddy end to a great year Saturday in the AAAAA championship.

Ranked in the top three and unbeaten by in-state competition, the Cats were eighth in 42 degrees, rain, mud, and a wind on the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) course.

The Cats were well back of Russellville and Cabot, teams they had beaten earlier. As expected, Rogers routed the field, scoring 41 points. Mountain Home was second with 72, Russellville at 109, and Cabot with 125.

The Lady Cats, having lost two runners to injuries, finished ninth, scoring 240 on the 4,000-meter course. Sarah Catherine Wilcox led by finishing 27th.

It was a championship in which everyone seemed heroic: fighting the mud, rain and wind. The finish seemed typical of the race: it was so wet and muddy several runners slipped and fell trying to stop.

Scoring for CHS were Josh Spradlin at 29th (17:12), Joseph Spradlin 39th (17:25), senior Derek Martindale 46th (17:35), and sophomores Michael Schrekenhofer 48th (17:38) and Daniel Friant 53rd (17:44). Friant ran most of the race with one shoe. Other Cats were sophomore Beau Theriot, 66th (18:06), senior Ace Hendrix, 69th (18:09), senior Eli Bryant 77th (18:21), and Ritesh Patel 79th (18:29).

For the Lady Cats, Wilcox was 27th (17:05), frosh Julie Coates 29th (17:11), Caryn Hapner 31st (17:14), junior Sarah Curry 57th (18:41), and senior Emily Heard 103rd (21:03). Sophomore Sarah Wilhoit was 112th (22:51).

"We're really disappointed," said coach Andy Dean. "But this is the way things sometimes happen. Derek (Martindale) has been a great leader, and he just didn't have a good day. But we're young, and the kids had a great year.
