Elizabeth June Maher

Published Friday, November 02, 2007

Elizabeth June Maher, 82, of Conway passed away Sunday (Oct. 28, 2007) at Conway Regional Medical Center after a short illness. She was born Aug. 1, 1925, at Wilkes-Barre, Penn., to Frank and Vida Mae Barney.

Mrs. Maher moved to Conway to be with her daughter and family after the death of Mrs. Maher's husband. This gave Betty the opportunity to spoil her grandson, Nathan, who was the apple of her eye. Betty became active at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, running their food pantry where she was affectionately known as "Ms. Betty" to her co-workers, fellow parishioners and clients. Betty had a wonderful, quirky sense of humor that made those around her laugh; she spent many happy moments discussing Seinfeld reruns with her friends. Her daughter, Beth, will miss her Mom the most since they shared many secrets, many laughs and many shopping trips. The two always said that when they headed out in the mornings on a shopping trip, they never knew where they'd end up. Beth's Mom taught her to use the good china every day because every day was special, that the only use for money was to make others happy and that no day was complete without laughter.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. William T. Maher and her son, William T. Maher Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Beth M. Knife and husband, Chris Knife; much adored grandson, Nathan; and five surrogate grandchildren, Jayden Knife, Will Shepard, Lindsay Shepard, Christina Shepard and Jim Shepard. A special thanks to Dr. Billy McBay, Dr. Bart Throneberry and the nurses and staff of Conway Regional Medical Center for their kindness, gentleness and caring.

A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 14 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Conway.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church Food Pantry, 925 Mitchell Street, Conway AR 72034 or the Arkansas Sheriffs' Youth Ranches, PO Box 3964, Batesville AR 72503. Arrangements are by Roller-McNutt Funeral Home In Conway.
