MAYFLOWER Mayflower's Lady Eagles celebrated Senior Night by having fun Thursday against Pine Bluff St. Joseph.

Mayflower rolled to a 25-9, 25-21, 25-10 win.

"We needed that," said Lady Eagle coach Traci Berry, whose team improved to 8-8 overall and 4-6 in the 3A-South. "This year has been up and down. We've been in a slump, but I hope we're pulling out of it."

Mayflower will close the regular season at Little Rock Lutheran next

Six Lady Eagles were honored on Senior Night Jackie Brown, Ramie Harrison, Janette Ragsdale, Maegen Boudreau, Katie Sewell and Alex Smith. But Berry was also able to work in freshmen Hannah Fulmer, Taylor Gregory and Halee Hensley.

After rolling through Game 1, the Lady Eagles moved out to a 12-7 lead in Game 2 on Whitney Whillock's winner. Ashley Dixon served St. Joseph within 14-13, and Helen Barajas served St. Joe to a 16-15 lead on back-to-back Mayflower errors.

Another Lady Eagle serve into the net gave St. Joe its final lead, 17-16. Fulmer, the freshman, put Mayflower up to stay, 22-18, on a Sewell kill from the right side, a return error and an ace. A Sewell ace gave the Lady Eagles game point at 24-20, and Boudreau ended the game with a kill from the right side, 25-21.

Boudreau served four consecutive aces in Game 3 to lift Mayflower by 5-1. St. Joseph rallied behind Barajas' serve to tie the game at 5, but Whillock served for 14 consecutive points. Eight came on aces; Ragsdale and Harrison combined for a block and Ragsdale, Sewell and Brown had winners during the streak. Sewell closed out the match with another ace.

"They had fun and played well as a team," Berry said. "We need that team out there all the time, every match."

The Lady Eagles, who reached the Class 3A State Tournament last year, will need to move up from fourth to third in the district tournament at Little Rock Episcopal Oct. 20-21 in order to advance this year.

CONWAY NETS

10TH CONFERENCE WIN

Conway's Lady Cats improved to 14-5 overall and a more-important 10-1 record in the 7A-Central on Thursday with a 30-28, 25-20, 25-19 win over Van Buren.

The Lady Pointers built a six-point lead in Game 1, but Conway rallied.

"It was tough in the first game," Conway assistant coach Holly Crossman said. "Their student section was pretty loud, but after we won that one, we came on."

Alexis Robertson and Danielle Young led the defense with 20 and 19 digs, respectively. Mary Dunlap added five blocks. Ashley Cyr put down 13 kills; Dunlap added nine. Dorene Reno served two aces. Young handed out 25 assists; Joleigh McManis added 12.

The Lady Cats also won the JV match, 25-22, 13-25, 15-9.

Britny Tomlin recorded 22 digs; Hannah Cooper added 13. Allison Shaw delivered 16 assists; Elizabeth Cole added eight. Caitlin Trickett and Cooper each had six kills; Maddie Shipp added five. Cole served five aces.

Conway will play host to the Lady Cat Invitational on Saturday.

VILONIA TAKES DOWN HARRISON

Karla Ault's Lady Eagles won their second 5A-West volleyball match of the week Thursday, knocking off Harrison, 17-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-10.

"We are on a roll," Ault said.

The Lady Eagles improved to 9-9 overall and 4-6 in conference play in their try for a state tournament berth. They must finish among the top four teams to advance.

"We served 89 of 92 for the match as a team, a great improvement over what we have been serving," Ault said. "We got behind in the third game 12-1 and came back and won. Our middle hitters hit the ball well tonight. I think our setters did a better job of getting the ball where they need it, and the middles were more aggressive."

Courtney McEntire was perfect on 11 serves and added 11 digs, four kills and two blocks. Sam Nealey served 15 of 15 with 11 kills, six blocks and three digs. Heather Brantley served 13 of 14 with 13 digs three kills and a block. Kalyn Rappold served 20 of 21 with 16 assists and a dig. Mallorie Ault served 10 of 11 with 12 assists and four digs. Taryn Castelanni had four blocks, two assists and two kills.

Jessica Ragland had three digs, two assists and a kill; Ashley Talbert served 20 of 20 with five digs. Liz Clites blocked 16 shots and put down nine kills; Victoria Samuelson had 13 digs.

"I also thought we hit better from both sides," Ault said. "Our hitting percentage was way up from what it has been. I could tell in warm-ups that we were going to hit better than we have."

Vilonia also won the junior varsity match, 18-25, 25-16, 15-6.

Julie Stanley served nine of 11 with 10 kills, seven blocks and two digs. Rappold served nine of nine with seven digs and an assist. Ault handed out four assists and added an ace and a dig. Scarlett Green served 14 of 15 and recorded eight digs. Ragland put down five kills and added a dig. Maggie Brewer had eight assists and six digs.

Samuelson had two kills and a dig; Betsy Bartlett blocked three balls and added a kill; Sarah Weaver had three kills and three blocks.

Kendall Cotton was perfect on seven serves and had a dig; Krystal Valentine had three digs.

Vilonia travels to Central Arkansas Christian on Tuesday.
