Smith steps down as Conway football coach
LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT
There will soon be a new head coach for the Conway High football team. After 18 years of service, Kenny Smith will step aside to accept other responsibilities in the Conway Public School District, according to school officials.

Smith finished his tenure with a 129-75 (63.2 percent) record with the Wampus Cats. He had coached in Conway for 25 years in all and won six conference championships, as well as played in the 1993 Class AAAAA state title game.

"No one bleeds Wampus Cat Blue any more than Coach Smith," Conway superintendent Greg Murry Said. "Our district and our community appreciate all that he has done to bring pride to our football program. We wish him the very best as he begins a new chapter in his professional career." The Cats have had their rough times in recent seasons, including a 2-8 record this past season. Conway, which has not made the state playoffs since 2006, also went 3-7 in 2007.

Murry said the district will immediately begin the process of finding a replacement for Smith.

Mitchell-Jones

Julie Renee Mitchell and Jonathan Dennis Jones, both of Conway, exchanged wedding vows June 21, at 1 p.m. at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico. The Rev. Pedro Folis-Rodriguez officiated the ceremony.

Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Donald Mitchell and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jones, both of Conway.

Escorted by her father, the bride wore a white, strapless, mermaid-style dress with a fitted bodice that was encrusted with seeded pearls and iridescent sequins. The bride wore a pearl necklace with pearl earrings and a tiara for her headpiece. She carried a bouquet of mixed tropical flowers.

Jennifer Mitchell, sister of the bride was maid of honor and Katie Mitchell, close friend of the bride served as her bridesmaid.

The two attendants wore black, strapless, chiffon, tea-length dresses with fitted bodices. They carried mixed bouquets of tropical flowers.

Robert Jones of Conway, brother of the groom, served as best man and the groomsman was Robert Mitchell of Springdale.

Following the ceremony, the guests were served champagne followed by a dinner at the Caribbean Sushi and Steak House.

Prior to the wedding, several parties and showers were held in honor of the couple. A "His and Her" shower was given by Jennifer Mitchell, sister of the bride, and Kelly Boyer, the bride's close friend. The shower was held pool side at the home of the bride's parents. The tropical theme was again central to the party and the couple received many household items for their new home.

A "miscellaneous" shower, hosted by teachers and friends of the groom's mother, Danna Jones, was held in the Media Center at Jim Stone Elementary School in Conway. Decorations again followed the tropical theme and the couple received many wonderful gifts from their registry.

A "bridal shower," held by Cheryl Brewer, Donna Bently and Cara Cates was held at the home of Cheryl Brewer, friends of both families. The couple was presented with many wonderful gifts.

After returning from an extended honeymoon in Cancun, the bride's parents hosted a reception honoring the couple at the Hilton Garden Inn in Conway. As the bride and groom entered the ballroom, they were introduced as Mr. and Mrs. Jones amid applause from a large gathering of family and friends. Guest tables were draped in white linen tablecloths with sheer, green overlays and held clear vases filled with tropical flower arrangements.

The large buffet table featured wrought iron vases also filled with tropical flowers.

Guests were served a variety of delectable delicacies as well as punch and a cash bad for adult beverages. The Candy Buffet displayed many varieties of candies in assorted-sized clear glassware. In addition, a chocolate fountain table held various fruits, marshmallows and pretzels for dipping.

The bride's table consisted of a 4-tier tone on tone wedding cake with the initial "J" on top and adorned with tropical flowers. The table featured a portrait of the bride in her wedding gown along with her beloved dog, Bandit.

The groom's table consisted of a 3-tier chocolate cake with chocolate drizzles and chocolate-covered strawberries, displayed on a large wrought iron cake stand made by Cheryl Brewer and Cara Cates. The bride surprised the groom is a self portrait in her wedding gown, proudly carrying a camo rifle, a camo garter displayed on her raised left leg and muck boots.

The couple, along with family and friends celebrated their union all night with music from the band "Music in Motion."
