New exhibit to recognize NY fashion

Published Thursday, September 04, 2003

NEW YORK (AP) - A new exhibit will pay tribute to the American designers who put New York on the fashion map and helped define American style around the world.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, the Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology will unveil "Seventh Avenue: Fashion Walk of Fame," bringing together a selection of designs by such New York fashion icons as Geoffrey Beene, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Perry Ellis, Halston, Marc Jacobs, Betsey Johnson, Norma Kamali, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Willi Smith and Pauline Trigere.

New York has been the capital of American fashion since the mid-19th century, when mass production led to the growth of the apparel trades, and Seventh Avenue has been home to the greatest names in American design since the 1920s.

The exhibit runs Sept. 23 through Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004.
