Smith steps down as Conway football coach
LOG CABIN DEMOCRAT
There will soon be a new head coach for the Conway High football team. After 18 years of service, Kenny Smith will step aside to accept other responsibilities in the Conway Public School District, according to school officials.

Smith finished his tenure with a 129-75 (63.2 percent) record with the Wampus Cats. He had coached in Conway for 25 years in all and won six conference championships, as well as played in the 1993 Class AAAAA state title game.

"No one bleeds Wampus Cat Blue any more than Coach Smith," Conway superintendent Greg Murry Said. "Our district and our community appreciate all that he has done to bring pride to our football program. We wish him the very best as he begins a new chapter in his professional career." The Cats have had their rough times in recent seasons, including a 2-8 record this past season. Conway, which has not made the state playoffs since 2006, also went 3-7 in 2007.

Murry said the district will immediately begin the process of finding a replacement for Smith.

Hendrix field hockey gets 3-0 win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. The Hendrix College field hockey team Saturday scored more goals in one game than it did the entire inaugural 2007 season in recording its first NCAA win in the young program's history, 3-0 over Earlham College.

The Warriors dropped their final game of the weekend, 6-0, against Bellarmine University on Sunday.

Hendrix first-year Emily Bell scored the team's first goal of the 2008 campaign on a rebound off the goalkeeper's pads at the 38:37 mark. Sophomore Katie Schaiff (Chesterfield, Mo.) put it past the keeper off an assist by Abby Coleman in the 54th minute of play. First-year Liz Williamson scored Hendrix's final goal of the day with a shot from the top of the circle on a break away.

Hendrix out shot Earlham 13-7. Warrior sophomore goalie Alyssa Havens posted a shutout performance with four saves.

Bellarmine University set the tone early on Sunday, as junior Reghann Covert scored on an assist from first year Allison Burns just 1:01 into the game. The Knights outshot the Warriors 21-1.
