University of Central Arkansas President Lu Hardin will undergo eye surgery in Memphis on Tuesday to treat the cancerous tumor recently found behind his right eye.
This surgery will be the second of its kind for the university president. The original surgery took place in May 2004 and then the cancer was stagnant for four years until a check-up in July, when a doctor discovered an even larger tumor, Hardin said in a recent interview. He said his doctor will treat the malignant melanoma by inserting a radioactive plaque into his right eye to shrink the tumor.
Hardin has said he, his wife, Mary, and their family members are confident about the success of the procedure, although he knows having the surgery performed a second time will be more serious.
