BREAKING NEWS
Dem. Party Chairman Killed
Bill Gwatney

Bill Gwatney, chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, was fatally shot this morning at party headquarters in downtown Little Rock. Gwatney died of his injuries in a Little Rock hospital this afternoon.

The shooter was pursued by police from numerous agencies to the Sheridan city limits, where he was shot and killed by Arkansas State Police troopers. Though the shooter's identity has not been released, he is described as a 51 year-old male.

District 30 Sen. Gilbert Baker (R-Conway), chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, said he was shocked, saddened and disappointed at the news.

"It's unbelievably shocking," Baker said. "I'm just praying for the Gwatney family. It's just beyond belief; a horribly sad, sad state of affairs."

Senate candidate Joe White (D-Conway) was devastated to hear news of the shooting and rumors that Gwatney had died.

Bill and Hillary Clinton issued the following joint statement this afternoon:

"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away. His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him. Our prayers are with his family during this time."

"I'm devastated; I can hardly talk," White said. "He was a long-time friend of mine, a caring, compassionate individual with strong convictions who worked hard every day.

"It's just senseless, senseless. He meant a lot to me and I talked to him and visited with him as late as Thursday. He was a visionary, always looking forward; a great guy. I can't say enough about him. He was a dear friend."

Gwatney finished a ten-year stint in the state senate in 2002. He was appointed chairman of the state Democratic Party by Gov. Mike Beebe after serving as finance chairman for Beebe's successful election campaign.

Guy

I went to Colorado the week of July 6-12 with my sister and her family. We had a great time. And we started it off with a bang - literally.

First, I drove to her house in Dallas on July 4 where our group got on her boyfriend's boat and watched the fireworks on Lake Ray Hubbard. I've always wanted to do that. It was great.

The next day, we loaded in the car and headed for Creede, Colo. The cabins at the resort where we stayed were built in the 1940's by the CCC for the workers who were building the Rio Grande Reservoir. They're very simple log cabins and, quite simply, perfect. No phones, no TVs, just indoor bathrooms and kitchens. And they're situated right by a rolling creek.

While there, we went to Creede and Lake City to shop and see the sights; we saw a play at the Creede Repertory Theater; we drove to Durango, the long way, going through Silverton and Ouray, which are both beautiful, historic towns. Of course, I thought about Doyle and Grace Jolly while we were in Lake City - it's one of their favorite places to visit.

We hiked up the mountain along Little Squaw Creek to spread the remainder of my brother-in-law's ashes. You may recall that he died last year on Aug. 2. Paul was an avid fly fisherman so we spread his ashes at his favorite fishing spot.

Then, my sister and I headed back to the cabin earlier than the rest of the group and we got lost. Lost in the wilderness for an hour and a half. We were exhausted when we stumbled upon our group walking along the trail. Needless to say, we won't do that again.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that, on the way to Colorado, we stopped in Amarillo, Texas to eat at the Big Texan. This is the restaurant that's famous for its big steaks: If you can eat a 72-ounce steak with all the trimmings in an hour's time, your meal is free.

Sure enough, there were two men who were doing their best to meet the challenge. Unfortunately, they weren't able to do it and had to pay for their meals. But it was fun watching them try.

It's good to be back.
