News Update
Arrest made in murder case

By JOE LAMB

LOG CABIN STAFF WRITER

A Jacksonville man has been charged with the murder of a woman whose remains were found Tuesday in a wooded area in a Jacksonville industrial park.

George Alan Smith, 33, was arrested late Thursday night and charged with capitol murder after day-long questioning from Faulkner County Sheriff's Office, Jacksonville Police Department and Arkansas State Police investigators led to information allegedly tying him to the remains.

The information that led to Smith's questioning and arrest came from an unnamed informant talking to FCSO investigators.

Sheriff Karl Byrd said he will continue to protect the identity of the informant as long as possible.

As Byrd was telling reporters at a press conference on the grounds of the Faulkner County Courthouse that the scope of the investigation was expanding to as many as 15 unsolved murders, Det. Matt Rice of FCSO and other investigators were heading to question Smith.

The man was taken into custody without incident and questioning began early Thursday afternoon at a Jacksonville police station. It wasn't until past 9 p.m. that night that investigators felt they were getting enough information from Smith to seek murder charges.

Smith had been employed by Wright's Cabinets, a business in the Jacksonville industrial park where the remains were discovered. Another location disclosed by the informant near Ann Lane was near Smith's home.

Smith's name also appears on a list of witnesses for the upcoming trial of a man accused of killing cousins Lonnie and Bobby Brock at the east Faulkner County home they shared on Aug. 10.

Smith is being held at the Pulaski County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

Last weekend Landon James spent the whole weekend with his Nana and on Saturday morning, we visited with his Aunt Charlotte (MeMe) and Uncle Gary (Pawpa) and went swimming in the big pool with Gavin, their grandson.

We had a great time and would like to thank them for letting us come and swim. On Sunday we went to church and he swam in his little pool at my house.

Services were well-attended last Sunday at Oakland Methodist Church. Bro. Bert Powell preached in Bro. Mark's place and filled us with the word. His sermon included "excuses me make." You know, we can do about anything we really want to do, if we are physically able. It really made you search your heart. If we love the Lord enough, we will pray, study the word, worship Him and do unto others as we would have done unto us.

Ray and I and Bro. Bert and Mary from our church attended the homecoming at Naylor Methodist Church last Sunday. We enjoyed lunch with them and signing in the afternoon.

The Hallelujah Harmony quartet will be coming to Oakland Church Saturday, Sept. 23, for a concert. We have heard that they are good. Mary Powell invited them and they accepted. We hope to have a good crowd.

We have lost another Hollandite Elsie Goode. She was a precious person. Out of eight children, Mildred Land is the only one left in that family. The family has our sympathy. Mildred has lost two sisters in this past month.

The Chris Zintel family has been on vacation in New York. They visited Chris's family while there. Please pray for Floyd Stevenson. He resides at the Greenbrier Nursing and Rehabilitation center.

The housewarming for Buddy Land went really well. He wishes to thank everyone for their love and support.

Bart and Amanda Sellers and their children, Haley, Henry and Charles, have been vacationing in Branson. They went to Celebration City, the Dixie Stampeded and the Titanic.

Bart visited with his Amish friends, Randy Wittman and family, in Seymour, Mo.

Services were good at Holland Baptist Church last Sunday morning and night. Bro. Ron always fills the church members' hearts with his messages.

Bro. Larry White will preach to the church Sunday, July 27, while Bro. Ron and family are on vacation. Bible school will be Aug. 3-7 with Shellye Resecker, school director.

Please pray for our country, our military and their families.

Centerville

By KELLI PETERS

CENTERVILLE CORRESPONDENT

I am very sad to report the passing of a lovely woman, Pauline McNew Hines, of Burkeville, Texas, on Monday, July 14. She was 93. Mrs. Hines, the daughter of Roland and Stella Avery McNew, was born on January 28, 1915, near the Fairview community in north central Faulkner County, and she grew up in the Centerville community.

Mrs. Hines attended school at Centerville and, upon completion of higher studies at Arkansas State Teachers College and the University of Texas, she became a well-respected educator in Vilonia, as well as in Burkeville and Newton, Texas, for more than 40 years.

In 1932, Mrs. Hines became a charter member of the history honor society, Phi Alpha Theta, at Arkansas State Teachers College (now UCA) in Conway; she was the last living charter member of that organization.

Shortly after beginning her studies at UT, she moved to Burkeville, where she married a pharmacist named Earl S. Hines, in 1940.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hines was held on Thursday, July 17, at Burkeville High School. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Rosemary Elizabeth Hines; and a brother, L. Doyne McNew. Surviving her are her son, Earl S. Hines, Jr. and his wife Dr. Betsy Burleson Hines, of Beaumont, Texas; a brother, Dr. Ben McNew of Conway; and two grandchildren, Dr. Stella Hines of Denver, Colo.; and Lt. Cade Hines and his wife, Stacie, of California. We extend our thoughts and prayers to the entire McNew and Hines families.

The 130th annual session of the Faulkner County Singing Convention will be held at Faith Baptist Fellowship Church in Naylor on July 25 and 26. Activities will begin at 7 p.m. July 25. On July 26, singing will begin at 10 a.m., breaking for a noon meal and will resume at 1 p.m. If you wish to observe or participate in a venerable tradition going back to 1879, mark this event on your calendar.

Over the July 4 weekend, vandals overturned, broke and otherwise damaged dozens of grave markers in the McNew Cemetery. Some of these markers identified the graves of early settlers to the area. Plans are underway to repair the damage and many are volunteering their services. Such willingness to help is deeply appreciated.

On that note, I would like to remind everyone that such crimes are Class D felonies. If you see or hear anything suspicious at any cemetery, please report your suspicions to the proper law enforcement authorities. Our ancestors are counting on us.

If you have something you'd like for me to report, please e-mail me at kelli.findeverything@gmail.com or call me at 590-0791. Thank you so much.
