Jennifer Gregory of Conway will go to Bulgaria this month to participate in an international theatre-training program.
Gregory is a junior theatre major at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. A total of 11 Southwestern students and two alumni are attending the program in Bulgaria this summer, along with theatre professors Sergio Costola, Rick Roemer and Jared Stein.
Gregory received a scholarship from Fourthworld Theatre Projects to attend the Rhodopi International Theater Laboratory (RITL), which will be held July 10-Aug. 10 in Smolyan, a town in the Rhodopi Mountains near Bulgaria's border with Greece. The Rhodopi Mountains are the mythological origins of Western theater, music and performance.
The program was created four years ago to advance theater technique through collaboration of theater practitioners, scholars and students from around the world. Students re-contextualize and recreate international legends and folk tales through workshops, seminars, performances, excursions, readings and collaborations with professional artists-in-residence.
Gregory was invited to participate in RITL as part of her work with Forthworld Theatre Projects, the company which organizes the laboratory for the RITL program. "I welcomed the opportunity not only to work for a nonprofit theatre company but also to engage in an environment that would help me grow as a theatre artist," Gregory said. She anticipates learning skills that she can apply to her future career in theatre, since she will be exposed to "the artistic side of the workshops and the business side of the program."
