Vilonia Middle School earned one of four third-place prizes in Scholastic Book Fairs' National Middle School Contest, winning a $500 shopping voucher from Scholastic, the global children's publishing, education and media company.
Vilonia students participated in the semi-annual competition by putting on a spectacular Scholastic Book Fair. The competition encourages schools to organize their own book fair by creating contests, designing book displays, hosting activities and developing themes, all aimed at getting kids to read.
Last spring, Vilonia Middle School's Book Fair theme was "Pop into a Good Book." To generate excitement about the Book Fair, the "Student Crew" hosted a pop art contest, where students were challenged to create art using pop related materials such as lollipops, Pop Rocks and popcorn.
The school held a Pop in with your Parents Day at the book fair, where students who brought their parents to the fair were entered for a chance to win a prize. During the special event, popcorn was served, and students and parents had the opportunity to have their photo taken in a giant book.
Students who spent $10 or more at the book fair could pop a balloon containing a prize. Students also could have their photo taken for $1. All of the proceeds went to the One for Books program, and were used to purchase books to send with teddy bears to students who were victims of a tornado.
