With double shifts of workmen, contractor William A. Peterson was making rapid progress on the foundations and basement walls of the new apartment dormitory of the Arkansas State Teachers College. He hoped to have it ready for occupancy at the opening of the fall semester next September. The building will contain eight double apartments, accommodating four students each; 17 apartment accommodating two students each; seven single bedrooms and three suites. Each apartment will be equipped with gas cooking stove, electric refrigeration, Murphy beds and furniture suitable for light housekeeping. The building was located on the southeast corner of the campus. It is of Georgian architectural design with red brick and heather tile roof.

George Allison Covington, retired Conway roofing contractor, died at Richardson Rest Home following an illness of several weeks. Mr. Covington was a charter member of the Conway Kiwanis Club, which was founded in 1925, and was the only charter member of the organization at the time of his death. He also was a Royal Arch Mason and a Methodist. He was survived by his wife, one son, two daughters, 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Mrs. Maggie Griffith, a mathematics instructor at Conway Junior High School, planned to visit a son in Europe next month. She will spend about two weeks in Vienna and at a resort near the Austrian capital with her son, Wayne Griffith.

Two Conway men and a Rose Bud man received promotions from their Arkansas National Guard units. David N. Broadway of Conway, a member of the Arkansas Air National Guard 189th Security Police Flight was promoted to staff sergeant. Clint W. Rose of Conway, a member of the Arkansas Army National Guard Co. D., Maintenance was promoted to specialists four. Loren E. Wilkinson of Rose Bud, a member of the same unit, was promoted to private first class.

Swing City Baseball, an 11-year-old AAU baseball team from Conway, won the Ozark City baseball tournament in Harrison. Members of the team were Landon Ezell, Daniel Coffey, Corey Springer, Phillip Bumpers, Clark Shadrach, Brandon Rogers, Michael Brett, Travis Lauer, Michael Shaddock, Andy Lee and Grant Garlington. Coaches were Chris Thorneberry, Larry Ezell and Doug Garlington.
Theodore Jones Sr., one of Conway's foremost educators died at his home. He was 75. In 1994, Jones was honored for his decades of service when the Conway School District named its newest elementary school on Freyaldenhoven Lane after him. "He was a a fine gentleman, a great educator and a good friend," said Steve Fulmer, superintendent of Conway Schools. Survivors were a son and three grandchildren. His wife, the former Laura Mattison, died in 1997.
