The University of Central Arkansas' Community School of Music will hold walk-in registration for the Summer II semester July 1 and 2 in room 203 of the UCA Snow Fine Arts Center, according to Jann Bryant, CSM director. Registration hours are 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 5 p.m.
Mail-in or internet registration is also available, but tuition must be paid prior to the first lesson or class. The Summer II semester starts July 7 (although some instructors will teach July 6, the July 4 holiday) and continues through Aug. 8.
The Community School provides adults and children in the central Arkansas area with an opportunity to pursue music study in a university setting. Private instruction is offered in piano, voice, guitar, fiddle, mandolin and most band and orchestral instruments. Tuition costs vary depending upon the length of the lesson, number of lessons and level of the instructor. The summer is an excellent opportunity for students preparing for early fall auditions or just trying to improve the skills they have been developing over the school year. It is also an opportunity to begin an instrument and only register for 4 or 5 lessons at a time. During the Summer II semester, Rock Camp, for 12-18 year olds, and Kindermusik camp for children 18 months - 4 years, will also be offered.
Beginning July 21, Kindermusik Camp will be held each Tuesday and Thursday from July 21 to Aug. 6. "Our Time: Confetti Days," from 10 to 11 a.m., will teach basic musical skills through the use of coordinated movement, games, folk songs, percussion instruments and listening activities. "Imagine That: Creatures in our Back Yard," from 1-2pm, will include more ear training, rhythmic and tonal activities, songs, and additional experiences with various instruments. Tuition for the "Our Time" and "Imagine That" camps is $125 and $145 respectively, but an "Early Bird" rate of $110 and $125 is available if registration is completed by July 7. Tuition costs include the cost of home materials. Because of maximum enrollment limits, call or e-mail the CSM office to secure a child's spot. Instructor Beth Lasley will give free class demonstrations at the Faulkner County Library on July 1, 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., for "Our Time" and "Imagine That" classes, respectively.
Rock Camp will be held July 6-10, culminating with a concert on Friday night, July 10. Camp hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the UCA Snow Fine Arts Center. Rock Camp is an intense program for guitarists, bassists, vocalists, and drummers at varying levels of instruction.
The camp is for students, ages 12-18, with a minimum of six months playing experience, according to camp director and UCA guitar professor, Smokey Emerson. Activities include morning assembly, classes, band rehearsals, sectionals, group activities, games and fun time. A trip to a local recording studio is also scheduled. The "Early Bird" tuition rate is $275 for students who register by June 25. Tuition is $300 after June 25 through 9 a.m. July 6.
The faculty of the Community School consists primarily of UCA Department of Music faculty members and selected graduate and undergraduate students, but also includes adjunct instructors who are professional musicians.
