News Update
Arrest made in murder case

By JOE LAMB

LOG CABIN STAFF WRITER

A Jacksonville man has been charged with the murder of a woman whose remains were found Tuesday in a wooded area in a Jacksonville industrial park.

George Alan Smith, 33, was arrested late Thursday night and charged with capitol murder after day-long questioning from Faulkner County Sheriff's Office, Jacksonville Police Department and Arkansas State Police investigators led to information allegedly tying him to the remains.

The information that led to Smith's questioning and arrest came from an unnamed informant talking to FCSO investigators.

Sheriff Karl Byrd said he will continue to protect the identity of the informant as long as possible.

As Byrd was telling reporters at a press conference on the grounds of the Faulkner County Courthouse that the scope of the investigation was expanding to as many as 15 unsolved murders, Det. Matt Rice of FCSO and other investigators were heading to question Smith.

The man was taken into custody without incident and questioning began early Thursday afternoon at a Jacksonville police station. It wasn't until past 9 p.m. that night that investigators felt they were getting enough information from Smith to seek murder charges.

Smith had been employed by Wright's Cabinets, a business in the Jacksonville industrial park where the remains were discovered. Another location disclosed by the informant near Ann Lane was near Smith's home.

Smith's name also appears on a list of witnesses for the upcoming trial of a man accused of killing cousins Lonnie and Bobby Brock at the east Faulkner County home they shared on Aug. 10.

Smith is being held at the Pulaski County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

Lady Cat ends season on high note

For Conway girls basketball coach Janet Taylor and former Lady Cat standout Chelsea Sublett, the season could not have ended on a better note.

As the East's all-star head coach, Taylor guided the team to 72-46 victory over West and Sublett was named the Outstanding Player of the East by her offensive play, while collecting 10 points and four rebounds on 4-of-5 from the field.

"In those games it's not about winning and losing, but it was good to get a win," Taylor said. "It was even special for us because Chelsea played well and one of our other players, Nadia Robertson was there as a team manager. So it was great that I was able to go through that experience with those two other Lady Cats."

Taylor's bunch captured the 7A state title this past spring, which was Conway's first under Taylor. Looking back on the season, Taylor said that she couldn't have asked for anything better. Being named the coach of the East all-star was also a first for Taylor.

"It was a tremendous experience," Taylor said, reflecting back on the events that occurred this past week. "(At the all-star game) you just get to be around quality kids. Not only are all of them good basketball players, but their excellent kids. They kept us busy with different activities that were planned."

Sublett's 10 points were both team and game-highs, along with teammate Cheree Freeman of Pine Bluff, who was named the Most Valuable Player, while Shiloh Christian's Chelsea Garrison took home the Outstanding Player of the West award on her nine points. Faulkner County had another all-star that cashed in on an exceptional game. Guy-Perkins' Nakeia Guiden gave the East a boost on seven points and two assists. She also created a game-high four steals and finished 3 of 5 from the floor.

Guiden is heading to the University of Central Arkansas, while Sublett is undecided on which school she will attend this fall. After a big game against some of the state's best basketball players, Sublett turned some heads of a few college coaches that were in attendance.

"Chelsea has been doing that for us all season," Taylor said. "She's not flashy at all. She just goes about things quietly and she just stays calm. When you look down at the stat book, then you'll notice that she had a good game. She's just a workhorse and a ballhawk. She knows how to get it done both offensively and defensively. "
