The Conway City Council approved on Wednesday the construction of about three-quarters of a mile of new sidewalks funded through a $113,000 Community Development Block Grant.
Community Redevelopment Director Lauralee Wilcox-McCool said the grant money is part of the 2009 Economic Stimulus and could only be used for infrastructure improvements for "low- to moderate-income neighborhoods."
Given what Wilcox-McCool said is a tight timetable for project completion, sidewalks were the best choice for the money.
"It was real fast-track kind of deal that had to be under contract real soon," she said. "We felt sidewalks would get the most good done in the fastest manner."
The new sidewalks will be built along:
The south side of Robins Street from Oakwood Village mobile home park to Harkrider Street;
The west side of Augusta Avenue from Bruce Street to College Avenue;
The east side of Donaghey Avenue from Weems to Caldwell streets;
And the north side of Caldwell from Donaghey to Western avenues.
