What were the class' favorite books to read together?
My class has really enjoyed getting exposed to larger chapter books that they have not yet been able to read. One of their favorites was "Number the Stars." Through our daily reading groups, each group gets to study and discuss a different book each week. Through the use of literature circles, each member of a reading group is responsible for a specific job and must come with that completed in order for their group to discuss the book together. They make connections between the book, characters and events to their own lives and other stories they have previously read.
What was the class' favorite topic studied during the school year?
Our favorite thing this year was our biography unit. Each student chose a person to research and wrote a two-page report on what they learned. They also had to create a display board which we put up and hosted a "Biography Fair" so that parents, other students and community members could come view their findings. I was so impressed with how much the kids learned from this. We also studied needs and wants and the concept of saving. We had a visit from Metropolitan National Bank in Conway, who did a presentation for the students and gave them information on saving even at a young age. They were excited to hear that even at a young age, they can have their own accounts at a bank.
What was the best class project?
In April, we participated in the Great Mail Race. We received a letter and questionnaire from a class in Iowa telling us all about themselves and in turn we were to fill one our and send it back to them. We also found a school in each of the 50 states to send the questionnaire to.
What were the students' favorite things to do at recess?
The boys liked to play organized games such as kickball or football. Mainly, the girls used the playground equipment such as swings or did dances and cheers in the court yard.
