Top teams return for WGA Mixed Scramble

Published Monday, May 12, 2008

The top three teams from last year's tournament return for this weekend's WGA Mixed Scramble Invitational at Centennial Valley.

Stephanie Stephens and Jeff Moore shot a 36-hole total of 122 last year to hold off Doris Zinser and Billy Vann, Moore's father-in-law, who shot 125. Debby and Rex Saddler finished third at 128.

According to tournament chair Lee Anne Hess, the event is a kickoff for the season at Centennial.

On Sunday, she said there was room for about 15 more teams. The event is open to the public; entry fee is $185 per team, which includes two rounds of golf, a practice round Friday, a pasta buffet by the pool and live music by Smooth Reflections Friday; a hamburger lunch Saturday, prime rib dinner and team auction Saturday night, coffee and doughnuts and lunch Sunday.

In addition, there will be a hole-in-one contest Saturday on No. 16 sponsored by the WGA and Smith Ford as well as a closest to the pin contest on both days. There will also be an optional putting contest at 11 a.m. Saturday.

VALLEY DAYS AT CVCC

Centennial will play host to Valley Days on Thursday, a gathering of women golfers from Clarksville Country Club, Lions Den, the John Daly course at Dardanelle; Chamberlyne at Danville, Russellville Country Club, Little Creek and Centennial.

The format will be individual stroke play. Hess said the $20 entry would cover cart, greens fee and lunch.

ROBERT L. OTT NEWS

Centennial's major event of the year, the Robert L. Ott Four-ball, will be pre-flighted, so golfers intending to play should be in the process of gathering a current handicap.

"I would like for all of our members to begin the process of keeping a current handicap in which you turn in all of your scores the good, the bad and the ugly," Centennial pro Mike Smith said. "A current handicap is your best measure to determine the status of your golf game."

JUNIOR CAMPS

Centennial Valley has scheduled two junior camps for June.

Golfers ages 5-15 are welcome to either session, June 3-6 or June 10-13. Each camp includes more than five hours of instruction, a Centennial camp t-shirt, bag tag and refreshments.

Cost is $85. Siblings may attend for $65. Cost for non-members is $95. For those who attend the first camp, cost for the second one is $35.

For more information, call the pro shop at 513-2522.

Central Arkansas Golf Academy has camps in June and July for golfers 6-16. The first has been rescheduled to June 9-13 to accommodate Faulkner County public school schedules. The second session will be July 28-Aug. 1.
