The Ballad of Toad Suck Ferry
By Helene Stallcup
Now it ain't in the books an I don't claim
to know how Toad Suck Ferry got its name,
Still I hev studied some an I kin guess
jist how it mights' happened, more er less
Old Hogwash Jed wuz waitin' fer the ferry
with half a hundred hogs an feelin' merry
When Pigsty Pete drove up another herd
an pushed his pigs ahead without a word.
Old Hogwash Jed, jist like a snake a-rattle
Run up to Pigsty Pete all set to battle,
An ordered him to head back down the road,
Well, that wuz when Pete said, "Go suck a toad!"
It wuz a fight like no one ever saw
With pigs and people runnin' up the draw,
With squealin' hogs and barkin' dogs
The worst sight ever seen in Arkansas!
Like Sunflowers
By Maxine Spyres Hixon
Like the Sunflower we should be,
Turning constantly to the light we see,
The Sunflower always follows the sun,
As it continues its path to run.
We should, if children of God, we be,
Desire to reflect His light - His Son.
Following His footsteps 'till day is done,
We will stay on course - battle won!
Meanwhile, until the battle is over,
Christ in our hearts - life's more fun!
Accept Him today - don't turn Him away;
As flowers follow light - we need follow God's Son.
Piney Bay
By Verle J. Acre
If you've never watched a sunrise
Weaving patters through the trees
Or felt the rocking of an anchhored boat
In the gentle morning breeze.
If you've never seen such beauty
As a lake as smooth as glass
Broken only by a boats wake
And the schooling of the bass.
You should see the grey mists rising
O'er the lake at Piney Bay
See the mornings soft sun splashed color
And the stripers out at play.
Get to know the joy of camping
The camaraderie of friends
Go out for some early fishing
Up where the lake shore bends.
And when the day is over
As head toward the shore
Watch the sun set on the mountains
With a vow to fish some more.
As the sun is slowly sinking
And we head toward the shore
Thinking of tomorrow
When we'll fish once more
You'll get a little taste of heaven
On the lake at Piney Bay
And know peacefulness and sun set
At the closing of the day.
