Normally my column is directed toward people like myself, working wife and mother but today is Mother's Day. If you are a mom, stop reading right now, you shouldn't be looking for recipes on Mother's Day. If you are looking for something to serve your mom though, I guess that would be all right.
My family has made it a tradition of cooking for me on Mother's Day, usually breakfast. I am not fond of the breakfast in bed idea; I don't want crumbs on the sheets, but I don't mind being woken up to find someone else made breakfast and let me sleep late. I like it even more if they actually do the dishes after its all said and done.
My husband was not a cook when we first got married but since our son was born 13 years ago and I was unable to be on my feet for a while, he learned to cook and became pretty good at it too. He especially likes cooking on the grill and doing breakfast.
His breakfasts are never anything fancy just standards like bacon and eggs and toast or sausage and biscuits. The biscuits are not homemade, usually Pillsbury or some other brand but they still taste good to me. Once in a while he might go for pancakes or French toast or an omelet.
There is one breakfast dish I ran across in a cookbook about a year ago that we like a lot and that could be what I'm having this morning. Since I write these columns ahead of time I won't know if they are actually making me breakfast or not or what it will be butif I base it on past experience then while you are reading this I'm likely eating some sort of breakfast food in my jammies while we all talk about our past week and discuss our plans for the day.
The recipe that the husband might try is one that I ran across is from the "2007 Pillsbury Best Of" cookbook. I modified it slightly because I do not care for the precooked bacon from the store. I just cut up fresh bacon and cook it myself rather than use the precooked stuff that seems inordinately dry and stringy to me.
