RUSSELLVILLE Conway sent an early message to Fort Smith Southside and others in the first round of the 7A-state softball tournament on Friday.
The Lady Cats popped the Lady Rebels 7-2 at Arkansas Tech by pounding out six hits. Conway's Kristen Shock heated up by going 2 for 3 at the plate, which included two doubles. Tia Houston also gave the Lady Cats a boost with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
"The most important thing was that we were able to get Kristen Shock started and we needed to do that," Conway coach Chad Longing said. "Jenny Beth (Davis) came through with a two-out, two-RBI hit. Now we're waiting on Natalye (Chudy). When Natalye fires off, then we'll be good to go."
Shock banged out her first double in the first inning, which allowed Houston to cross home. Conway exploded with four runs in the bottom of the third, expanding the lead to 5-0. Houston scored the Lady Cats' second run of the game, as she was declared safe at the plate after the catcher let a ball get away. Shock, Chudy and Jordan Teetens each scored for Conway in that inning.
"I think we could have finished with a little more intensity, but we started well," Longing said. "Right now all you have to do is win."
Conway plays Bentonville at 1:45 p.m. today in the second round at Russellville's Hickey Park.
"I expect to see a very good Bentonville team," Longing said. "They'll come in here (today), and they'll be prepared. We'll have to play better to win."
For Conway, Kacey Moore recorded the win.
