Allison Stanford, the winner of the 2008 National Opera Association Young Artist Competition, will perform in a Benefit Concert, "A Night of Opera and Musical Theatre," on May 15 at 7:30 p.m., in the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church at 2400 Prince St. in Conway. This benefit concert is given to raise funds for operatic studies at the Lyric Opera Studio of Weimar (LOSW) in Weimar, Germany. Admission is free, but donations of any size are appreciated. Contact First Presbyterian Church of Conway at 329-6483 for more information.
Stanford, a soprano, is one of 40 singers chosen to attend LOSW from an applicant pool of over 200 singers. During the four-week program in July, she will perform in an opera scenes production and receive high quality training from an international staff. The staff includes coaches from the renowned Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, the former General Director of the Finnish National Opera, as well as the Chief Dramaturge and the Repetiteur from the German National Theater.
Included on the program are the arias "O mio babbino caro" from Gianni Schicchi by Puccini, "Je dis que rien" from Carmen by Bizet, and "A simple sailor lowly born" from H.M.S. Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan; as well as the standards "Moon River" by Henry Mancini, "Fly me to the Moon" by Bart Howard, and "Night and Day" by Cole Porter.
Stanford, a graduate of Conway High School and an alumna of the University of Mississippi, graduated in May from Arizona State University with a Master's of Music in Opera Performance. She has performed extensively on the operatic stage, and her favorite roles include: Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Yum Yum in The Mikado and Papagena in The Magic Flute. In June, she will perform the leading role in Gilbert and Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore with the Oxford Shakespeare Festival in Mississippi.
This April, Stanford sang as a National Finalist at the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Competition in Denver, Colo. During September and October of 2007, Songs Unlimited Inc. hosted Stanford in an Artist-in-Residence program in La Paz, Bolivia. While in South America, she performed leading roles in the zarzuela scenes production, Viva La Zarzuela!, taught a master class at the Bolivian National Conservatory and performed in two vocal chamber music concerts with UCA soprano Andrea Ramos.
