Help after the storms

Published Friday, April 11, 2008

Dara Tapley, licensed Realtor with Central Arkansas Real Estate and Mickey Upton, construction manager with Mid South Construction and Renovation, have joined forces to provide consumers with a hard-hitting list of guidelines for dealing with the storm and flood damage in the recent months.

"Too many homeowners run the risk of making a bad situation worse," Tapley said. "They deal with the devastation of having their homes damaged and have to hire someone to do the much needed repairs. All too often, they hire someone who takes their money but doesn't see the job through to completion."

Upton added, "Homeowners must make absolutely certain they are selecting a reputable, licensed, and fully insured contractor before signing any agreements or giving anyone any money. That is critical in order to have real peace of mind."

Tapley and Upton are working together to provide home and business owners the Consumer Guide to New Home Construction and Renovation. In this completely free report, consumers will find "Tips for Selecting a Reputable Contractor," as well as "Ten Things You Absolutely Must Know Before You Build or Renovate Your Home." Particularly relevant to those facing major storm damage are the recommendations pertaining specifically to the selection of a reputable contractor. The pair recommends the following guidelines:

1. Always insist on an established, licensed and insured contractor. Licensed contractors are regulated by the State of Arkansas and must meet certain standards or face losing their license. To check on the licenses status of a particular contractor, call 501-372-4661.

2. Ensure that the contractor you select has both general liability and workers compensation insurance. Otherwise, you may be held liable in the event a construction worker is injured on your property.

3. Do not hesitate to ask for references from your potential contractor.

4. If you have trouble getting in touch with your contractor during the bidding process, you should assume it will only get worse after you sign a contract. Only hire someone who will return your calls promptly.

5. Ensure your contractor is a member of the Better Business Bureau. To check for membership credentials call 501-664-7274.

Tapley and Upton also urge consumers to contact their insurance companies before they begin getting estimates. Upton explains, "The insurance companies have a stake in this also. By joining forces with their insurer, consumers reduce their risks considerably."
