Teacher Appreciation week concluded at Sallie Cone Elementary School with the announcement of winners in an essay contest. Students had written essays on the theme, "My teacher is great because ..." The winning essay, submitted by Leah Williams, a fifth-grader, was as follows: My teacher is great because she plays with us and she's like a grassy prairie - nice and sweet. She teached me right and she is fair with everyone. The second place finisher was Karen McNiece, a second-grader, and Daom Lewis, a fifth-grader was third. The teachers were given something special each day of the week. They were given a salad luncheon one day and served homemade pies another day. The activities were sponsored by the school's Parent-Teacher Organization.

Jane Diles Morgan gave a $50,000 gift to the Music Department of the University of Central Arkansas. Mrs. Morgan said she had loved music all of her life. She complimented Sam Driggers, chairman of the music department at UCA, whose spirit and zeal fueled the department. "He has done a wonderful job. I wanted to help in some way," said Mrs. Morgan. The donation would be used for the upkeep of the many pianos and other instruments used in the department and for other purposes deemed worthy for the benefit of students and faculty.
