Winners named in Miss Conway, Miss Teen Conway pageants

Miss Conway 2001 Mary Katherine "Katie" Bailey and Miss Teen Conway 2001 Chanley Painter received their respective crowns on Feb. 17 and are making plans for state competitions in June.

Miss Bailey, 18-year-old daughter of Jim and Fran Bailey of Conway, will compete in the Miss Arkansas Pageant, set Wednesday, June 13, through Saturday, June 16, at the new Hot Springs Convention Center. A senior at Conway High School West, Miss Bailey also won the Newcomer Award and the talent competition for her vocal rendition of "Since I Fell for You."

Miss Bailey received a total of $2,800 in scholarship money, including $1,500 as the Miss Conway winner, $1,000 as the talent winner and $300 for the Newcomer Award. Her critical issue is promoting student and school safety.

Chanley Painter, 16-year-old daughter of Michael and I'Lisa Painter, will compete in the Miss Teen Arkansas Pageant, set Friday, June 29, and Saturday, June 30, at the old Hot Springs Convention Center. A sophomore at Conway High School East, Miss Painter won the talent competition and tied in the interview competition. She won $700 in cash prizes, including $500 for the Miss Teen title, $100 for the tie in interview and $100 for the talent award.

Miss Painter won the talent award with a self-arranged fiddle piece titled "Fiddle Medley." Her critical issue is "Dare to Be Different" and deals with sexual abstinence.

Others receiving awards in the Miss Conway pageant were:

* Katherine "Katie" Signaigo, 20-year-old daughter of John and Cindy Signaigo of Little Rock, first runner-up. Miss Signaigo was Miss University of Central Arkansas last year. She attends UCA and she performed a vocal selection for her talent. She received a $1,000 award.

* Susan Erwin, 21-year-old daughter of Paul and Debra Erwin of Malvern, second runner-up. Miss Erwin attends UCA and she performed a piano selection for her talent. She received $700.

* Erin Lewis, 19-year-old daughter of Robert and Alice Longnecker of Stuttgart, third runner-up. Miss Lewis attends UCA and she performed a tap dance for her talent. She received a $500 award for third place as well as $500 for winning the swimsuit competition, $300 as the Kay Allen Rosenblum dance award winner and $300 as a Newcomer Award winner.

* Whitney Beckham, 19-year-old daughter of William and Mary Beckham of Jasper, Miss Congeniality. Miss Beckham is a student at UCA and she won $1,000 in the interview competition and $100 as Miss Congeniality.

Others receiving awards in the Miss Teen pageant include:

* Ambyr Martin, 17-year-old daughter of Gregg and Sonya Penny of Conway, first runner-up. She is a junior at Conway High School West and she performed a vocal selection, "Next Time Love." She received a $300 prize.

* Carrie Beth James, 15-year-old daughter of Kerry and Glenda James of Conway, second runner-up. She is a ninth-grade student at Conway High School East and she performed a vocal selection, "Can't Help Loving That Man of Mine." She received a $200 prize.

* Lauren Austin, 16-year-old daughter of Hugh and Wreneta Austin of Conway, Miss Congeniality. She is a junior at Conway High School West and she performed a vocal selection "Rock-a-Bye with a Dixie Melody." She received $50.

* Sierra Summers, 16-year-old daughter of Richard Summers and Susan Summers of Conway, tied for the interview award. She is a junior at Conway High School West and she performed a vocal selection, "Walking After Midnight." She received $100.

According to representatives of the local pageant system, a total of $7,200 in scholarships and $1,250 in cash prizes was awarded.
