HENDRIX TRUSTEES DECIDE TO ADD FOOTBALL
After a 13-month study and debate, Hendrix College's board of trustees has decided to add football to the college's athletic program. Football was discontinued at Hendrix after the 1960 season because of costs. No timetable was set for football to be implemented, but trustees said the sport will only be implemented after start-up costs are raised from external sources. Trustees have also voted to add women's lacrosse with the same stipulation. Further details in Wednesday's editions of the Log Cabin Democrat.

Lady Colonels start slowly, surge past Sugar Bears

THIBODAUX, La. Despite an early nine-point deficit and a 1-for-18 start from the floor, the Nicholls State Lady Colonels proved too much for the University of Central Arkansas on Saturday, getting their first-ever win over the Sugar Bears, 78-66.

The Sugar Bears (7-21, 5-10 Southland) got out to a 9-0 run to start the game but were outscored by 21 the rest of the way as the Lady Colonels (6-19, 4-10) improved to 1-3 all time against UCA.

After a promising first half that ended with UCA ahead 37-32, the Sugar Bears found themselves with all kinds of troubles in a second half in which they were outscored 46-29 and turned the ball over 16 times.

"There were several factors that hurt us in the ballgame," UCA interim head coach Ron Marvel said. "Laura Beth (Anderson) got in foul trouble early and that created a lot of problems. We had a couple kids make some real silly turnovers and we threw the ball away a bunch of times and didn't take care of it like we should have. We made a lot of blunders, and then when things got tight what we thought might happen happened, and when that started going on we didn't have much of a chance."

Meaghen Kelleybrew had 16 points to lead UCA in scoring, with Kia Lee adding 11 and Alex Velazquez getting 10, all in the first half.

Chorcelle Taylor led the Sugar Bears with nine rebounds to go with her eight points, all of which came from the free throw line where she was 8 for 10.

For the game, UCA shot 37.3 percent (19 of 51) from the field and 27.3 percent (3 of 11) from the 3-point line. Nicholls shot 34.3 percent (23 of 67) and hit 30 percent (6 of 20) from beyond the arc. The Sugar Bears conclude their season next Saturday when they return to the Farris Center to take on Northwestern State at 4 p.m.
