Rose Bud High School EAST program kicks off the new year

Published Sunday, January 18, 2009

The Rose Bud High School EAST Program started off the new year and the new semester looking forward to projects going on.

Ryan Harbin, one RBHS EAST student who is interested in protecting our environment, works on her GO GREEN! Project and is hopefully building the world's largest recyclable paper ball.

Harbin, in trying to make a statement and get other students to realize the difference they can make, filed an application with Guinness Book of World Records to build the largest paper ball. To date, it looks like the largest paper ball is 14-feet 20-inches in size. Harbin's facilitator, Tami Baker, said, "My room is looking less like a classroom and more like a trash center every week, but it is sure worth it."

Harbin hopes to have the paper ball finished by March 3 when the RBHS EAST Conference Team leaves for the 2009 EAST Partnership Conference in Hot Springs.

Brock Avery, another EAST student, got his Christmas present early when he found out that the sales tax ballot for the city of Rose Bud sewer system passed in the November election.

Avery has worked on the sewer system project for more than a year, corresponding with the mayor to help any way he can.

Last year, Avery, along with other city officials, went to Bethel Heights, a suburb of Springdale, to look at their sewer system which is the same system Rose Bud is planning.

In addition to handing out flyers all over town advising voters to vote for the sales tax, Avery also attended the town hall meeting before the election where the sewer system was the hot topic.

Other student-created projects keep the excitement flowing in the RBHS EAST classroom. Projects such as Sydney Starkey's The New Beautiful project that aims at increasing self-esteem in young girls; Tori Lea Lemieux and Erika Kaylor's Computers for Kids project which placed 32 used computers into the homes of students who couldn't afford one otherwise; and C.J. Bramlett's Rose Bud's Biggest Loser project that has helped community members lose a total of more than 400 pounds.

There are many other students whose focus is on learning new software, such as Ikey Ray who is talented in Adobe PhotoShop CS3 and CS4, and has even been asked by EAST to create tutorials; Matt Andrews, Nathan Bush, and Tyler Williams have learned how to use ArchiCAD and are designing a layout of the school campus for the police and fire departments to use; and again, C.J. Bramlett who specializes in video editing and the use of Adobe Final Cut Pro, After Effects, PhotoShop CS3, and Dreamweaver.

RBHS EAST has an open-door policy, and visitors are welcome. For more information about the EAST Initiative, visit the Web site at www.eastproject.org.
