Despite the cold, catching fish is possible

Yes, you folks snuggled warm indoors, there is still fishing around the Faulkner County area.

Not a lot of folks are out, and that's understandable. It is cold. Some places are iced over, though it's thin. Conditions aren't going to change in the next day or two, according to forecasts. But some people are going out and fishing.

If you have the urge, one suggestion is to seek running water. The Arkansas River is an obvious spot for this reason, and so is the trout area of the Little Red River below Greers Ferry Dam.

But stay warm when you do. You just might catch a fish or two, then youll have a story to take back to the office or shop.

LAKE CONWAY

Rick Bates at Bates Field and Stream said a few crappie are being caught around the Gold Creek and Caney Creek bridges. Water is murky, but a few are being brought in. Bream are hitting best on worms.

LITTLE RED RIVER

Sonny Martin at Lindsey's Rainbow Resort said water levels are low right now with sporadic power generation in the mornings. Bait fishing is good right now. Fly fishing has been good using egg patterns and sow bugs. Brown trout are on beds near islands.

LAKE OVERCUP

Ruby Alstir at Lakeview Landing said some large crappie are being caught in deeper water around tree stumps. Catfish are fairly slow on live bait. A few white bass are being landed.

LAKE MAUMELLE

Roger Nesuda at Jolly Roger's Marina said black bass are good on jigs in deep water. Crappie fishing is fair off of the main channels on minnows and white and red jigs. White bass can be caught trolling at the east end of the lake.

ARKANSAS RIVER

Charlie Hoke at Charley's Hidden Harbor near Oppelo said the river flow is 30,00 cubic feet per second at Lock and Dam 9. Catfish are good in deep holes on whole shad and a mixture of shrimp and worms. Some nice saugers are being caught below the dam using chartreuse jigs tipped with a minnow. Spotted bass are on rocks and hitting Gitzits along with pig and jig combinations. White bass and striped bass are moving back to the mouths of creeks.
