After his contributions to the women’s basketball program the last two years, Greg Long has been promoted from assistant coach and recruiting coordinator to associate head coach by Sugar Bear coach Sandra Rushing.
During the last two years, the Sugar Bears have won back-to-back Southland Conference tournament championships to earn consecutive NCAA Tournament berths; won a share of the Southland Conference regular-season championship; compiled a 54-9 record; and had top-100 RPI finishes in each of the last two seasons, the only program in Arkansas to do so.
“Greg is such an integral part of our program,” Rushing said. “His knowledge and passion for the game are exceptional. Greg is not only a great coach but a great person. He has an incredible work ethic and is a tremendous example for our players. He works tirelessly to make sure we keep improving this program. He is the whole package and it is a well-deserved recognition for him.”
Through two seasons at Central Arkansas and two seasons with Long as a fulltime assistant for Rushing at Delta State from 2010-12, teams they have coached have won nearly 85 percent of their games – compiling a record of 104-20 and are 4-for-4 in making NCAA tournaments.
“This is truly a special place. The UCA family and city of Conway have welcomed with open arms and we have already made friends that will last a lifetime,” Long said. “It is truly an honor to work with such wonderful young women on a daily basis and work for a head coach like Sandra. It’s not every day you can say your mentor has accomplished as much as coach Rushing has.”
