Sideline: Brodacki honor; UCA baseball and softball schedules

Following a record-setting performance in Central Arkansas’ final regular season game, sophomore Niklas Brodacki has been named the Missouri Valley’s Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.

 

Brodacki had a bigtime performance in Central Arkansas’ lone game of the week, scoring four goals and adding an assist in the Bears’ 6-1 win over Oral Roberts on Tuesday.

UCA is the second seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament after finishing the season with a 5-2-0 record in MVC play, return to action on Friday night .

36 home games for UCA baseball

The University of Central Arkansas baseball team will host 36 home games at Bear Stadium next spring, including the first 12 of the 2018 season.

The Bears open the season with a three-game series against Northern Illinois on Feb. 16-18. The long homestand also includes games with in-state rival Little Rock on Feb. 20, a three-game series with perennial power Missouri State on Feb. 23-25 and a weekend series with the Creighton Blue Jays on March 2-4. UCA went 20-9 at Bear Stadium last season.

UCA also welcomes Big 12 Oklahoma State to Conway on Tuesday, March 20, along with Wichita State a week later on Tuesday, March 27. The Bears open Southland Conference play on Friday, March 9 against defending regular-season champion McNeese State in Lake Charles, La.

Sam Houston State, which beat UCA 9-4 in the SLC Tournament championship game last season, hosts the Bears on April 20-22 in Huntsville, Texas. Another NCAA Regional team, Southeastern Louisiana, comes to Bear Stadium on May 11-13, as well as in-state rival Arkansas State on May 8.

UCA plays at Arkansas State in Jonesboro on Tuesday, April 24. The final two games of the “Rock N Roar Rivalry” with Little Rock are April 3 at Little Rock and May 15 at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock, home of the Arkansas Travelers. UCA also has a home-and-home series with Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Tough slate awaits UCA softball

The UCA softball team, who have made five straight appearances in the Southland Conference tournament, will face a 2018 schedule that features eight 2017 NCAA Regional teams and will play 26 games at Farris Field.

Central Arkansas will open the season on the weekend of February 9-11, travelling to Gulf Shores, Alabama to take part in the Sand Dollar Classic. The Bears will face off with 2017 Super Regional team Alabama, Virginia Tech, Florida A&M and Penn State.

The Bears’ schedule will get even tougher during the second weekend of the season, when they travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to take part in LSU’s Purple and Gold Challenge, which features 2018 Super Regional team LSU, and 2017 Regional opponents Oregon State and Louisiana Tech.

Central Arkansas will open its home schedule on the weekend of February 22nd through February 25th, hosting Kansas, Boise State, ULM, Coppin State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Austin Peay, and South Dakota State for a four-day tournament that will have six seven teams play 19 games split between Farris Field and Hendrix’s Warrior Field.

Central Arkansas will make its final trip of the preseason during the first weekend of March, traveling to Madeira Beach, Florida, to take part in the Eastern Michigan Maderia Beach Invitational tol take on Southern Illinois-Edwardsville,Eastern Michigan Long Island, Seton Hall and Villanova.

After a final non-conference tune-up at ULM on Tuesday, March 6th, the Bears will open Southland Conference play at home, welcoming two-time defending SLC champion McNeese State to Farris Field. UCA will also play 2017 regional participant Mississippi State (March 21st), 2017 regional team Oklahoma State and 2017 Super Regional team Ole Miss.
