Sports roundup: Conway baseball, CBC golf, Ruth Doyle track

North Little Rock (16-6, 7-2) took over sole possession of second place in 7A Central on Tuesday with a 4-2 victory over Conway (13-6, 6-3) at DeJanis Park in North Little Rock.

 

Cabot, Conway’s opponent Thursday in a rescheduled game because of the forecast of rainy weather Friday, leads the conference at 9-0.

The Cats were limited to four hits Tuesday. Eli Davis was 2 for 3 with an RBI. McCall Dail was 2 for 3 with two RBI.

Jordan Wicks allowed six hits and struck out nine.

North Little Rock (13-4, 6-2) took a 2-0 victory over the Lady Cats (5-4, 11-10-1) in a game at a nearby softball field.

UCA golf

At Mckinney, Texas, on Wednesday, the University of Central Arkansas women’s golf team finished as runnerup at the Southland Conference Championship.

Houston Baptist topped UCA by a single stroke at Woodforest Golf Club, shooting 881 to UCA’s 882. UCA placed three players in the Top 10 overall. Sophomore Emma Svensson tied for fourth overall, shooting 73-73-73 for a 6-over 219. Junior Fernanda Lira tied for sixth at 76-73-71-220, while senior Brenda Gonzalez shot 74-77-70-221 and tied for eighth. That trio also finished in the top 10 last season.

Sophomore Cindy Oh shot 77-72-74-222 and tied for 11th place, while senior Morgan Best shot 78-79-77-234 and tied for 31st.

HBU and UCA were followed by Sam Houston State (885), Lamar (897), Stephen F. Austin (898), McNeese State (905), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (909) and Incarnate Word (943).

Medalist honors went to HBU’s Lexi Brooks with a 3-under 210.

CBC golf

The Central Baptist College men’s golf team finish in a tie for 10th among 17 teams from NCAA Division II and the NAIA at the Natural State Classic at the Red Apple Inn at Heber Springs.

Arkansas Tech University captured the men’s team event with a two-day total 576 (285-291). Host Harding University was second with a 579 (291-288) and Henderson State third 583 (292291). CBC had a two-day total of 610 (309-301).

On the women’s side, Freed-Hardeman University claimed the title with a two-day total 666 (338-328). Arkansas Monticello was second at 669 (343-326) and Southern Arkansas University finished third at 685 (350-335).

CBC did not field a complete women’s team. MaKenzie Baker finished 27th with a 191 (94-97) and Shelby Raborn was 28th at 194 (97,-97). Freed-Hardeman’s Kayland Boling led wire to wire and finished with a two-day 158 (81-77).

Austin Harmon again led the Mustangs on the men’s side tying for eighth place in a field of 65. Harmon shot a 2-over 144 (74-70). Harding University’s Mason Banger was medalist with a 2-under 140. CBC’s Cameron Ressor tied for 17th at 147 (76-71).

Ruth Doyle track

Ruth Doyle girls set four records Tuesday at a seventh-grade track meet at Conway.

Karsen Roach set a discus record with 57-08. Lauren Hill broke her record in the shot with 32-10. Madison Holloway also broke two of her own records with 17.62 in the 100 hurdles and a long jump of 15-01.
