Steve Cox, a former NFL place-kicker and star for the Arkansas Razorbacks, will be the featured speaker at the 18th annual Hendrix College Fellowship of Christian Athletes Bob Courtway Memorial Breakfast on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 a.m. at the Hendrix Wellness & Athletics Center.
Cox, who played high school at Charleston, kicked three field goals in Tulsa’s 9-3 victory over the University of Arkansas in 1976. The following year he joined the Razorbacks and became a record-setting kicker, All-Southwest Conference twice, and an All-American. In 1981, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and kicked a 60-yard field goal, which was the second longest in NFL history at the time. He is one of only seven to kick 60 yards or more. After four years with the Browns, he played for the Washington Redskins from 1985-88, where he held their record for the two longest field goals with kicks of 55 and 57 yards. Cox was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
David Grimes will again emcee the program named in memory of Dr. Bob Courtway, who served Hendrix College for 31 years as a professor, Hall of Fame swimming coach, and athletic director.
Tickets are $20 and a table of eight can be reserved for $150. Student tickets are $7. Interested persons are recommended to purchase tickets by Oct. 4. The proceeds of the event go to scholarships for area youths and to FCA.
For tickets or more information contact Cliff Garrison at 733-2022 or Vance Strange at 690-4341. No tickets will be sold at the door.
