McCollum's Column: A state title prompts wave of memories from 1988

Posted: March 9, 2013 - 5:30pm

This column falls into a picture is worth a thousand words category.

It’s a blast from the past.

When the Conway High girls recently won the state swimming and diving title, Betty Courtway visited her attic.

She found a team photo from 1988, the last time the Wampus Cats won the state championship under coach Bob Courtway, her late husband.

It was an era in which the Conway team practiced in small, confined pool at Hendrix’s old Grove Gymnasium. That pool, with few fancy trappings, served as one of the swimming headquarters of Arkansas. Bob Courtway was a leader in introducing the sport to the state.

The period is easily identifiable by fashion.

Check out the photo. You might even spot someone you know or remember
