Conway girls fall to rally in seventh

Vilonia softball, St. Joseph girls soccer reach semifinals

Van Buren’s Tori Stafford’s walkoff single propelled the Pointers into the 7A softball semifinals Saturday.

The Lady Pointers (23-7) slipped past Conway (22-7), 5-4, in the quarterfinal game at City of Colleges Park. They’ll play defending state champion North Little Rock at noon Monday for a state finals berth.

Alexa Golden’s two-run home run to right center tied the score at 4 in the top of the sixth as a light rain came down.

After Conway’s Madi Shaw made a superb diving catch in center for the first out in the bottom of the seventh, Ashton Sangster reached on a bunt single and stole second. Stafford, who drove in one run with a single in the third, hit a sharp liner to left that scored Sangster with the winning run. Stafford was also the winning pitcher.

The Lady Pointers broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the third on Stafford’s RBI and a two-run single by Emnile Aaron.

The Lady Cats rallied for two runs in the fourth on a hit batsman, two walks, Rachel Jones’ single and a fielder’s choice.

Van Buren took a 4-2 lead on the fifth on a hit batsman, a bunt single and a sacrifice fly.
