High school roundup: Conway baseball and soccer; Mayflower baseball

Conway soccer teams opened conference play Friday with victories over Russellville.

 

The Wampus Cats won, 1-0, after Beltran rebounded his blocked penalty kick and put it in the back of the net.

The Conway girls won, 3-2.

Shelby Hammett scored in the first 10 minutes. The Lady Cats added a goal by Maya Madden off a cross from Hammett. Conway took a 3-1 lead 13 minutes into the second half when Madden dribbled past three defenders, then passed to Peyton Turner for the goal.

Russellville scored in the final minute on a free kick.

Conway’s JV boys won, 1-0, with 30 seconds left in the game scored by freshmen Alex Aguirre.

CONWAY BASEBALL

The Conway baseball team romped past Rogers Heritage, 10-2, Saturday to go 2-1 in the Best Classic in northwest Arkansas.

Cade Jones and Beau Walter had three hits each for the Cats. Jones had two RBIs.

Friday, the Cats pounded out 11 hits in a 12-2 win over Rogers. Jones, Cade Tucker and Kyle Alexander each had two hits. Matt Strickland was the winning pitcher.

Thursday, Bentonville defeated Conway, 11-1.

MAYFLOWER BASEBALL

BAUXITE — The Mayflower baseball team advanced to Saturday night’s finals of the Bauxite FCA Tournament with a 10-1 victory over Heber Springs.

Michael Post scored in the first inning on a wild pitch after a leadoff single and two stolen bases to give the Eagles a lead that they would never give up. Mayflower scored three more runs in the third on two Panther errors and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Herrin to push the lead to 4-0.

Mayflower added six more in the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate. The inning was highlighted by hits from Tyler Godwin, Herrin, and Garrett Taylor along with RBIs from Trey Bradley and Drew Duncan.

Justin Sewell struck out seven in getting the victory.
