Faulkner basketball roundup: St. Joseph teams and MV-Enola girls gain state berths

While the season ended in regional play for three Faulkner County teams, both boys and girls teams from St. Joseph qualified for the state tournament with victories.

Thursday afternoon, the host Mount Vernon-Enola Lady Warhawks clinched a state berth with a 59-44 victory over Concord.

In the 2A West Regional at Eureka Springs, the St. Joseph girls defeated Magazine, 59-39. The Bulldogs downed Johnson County Westside, 61-42.

Both teams will play in the semifinals Friday night. All four semifinal teams advance to state tournament play at Hampton, so it’s a struggle for seeding now.

Madeline Moix scored 22 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Rachel Briggler added 13 and six assists. Anna Mayor had 10 points and six rebounds. Taylor Womack added seven rebounds.

“The girls played well, good contributions from the bench as well,” said St. Joseph coach Chris Kordsmeier.

The Lady Bulldogs will play the Johnson County Westside-Conway Christian winner at 7 p.m. Friday.

The St. Joseph boys defeated Johnson County Westside, 61-42. Drake Cooper led with 12 points and seven rebounds. Dylan abnd Taylor Schreckenhofer had 10 points each. Nash Nichols added 10 points. “We had good balance on offense,” said St. Joseph coach Brent Bruich. “The bench also played well tonight.”

The St. Joseph boys will play either Union Christian or Western Yell County at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

In the Class A Region 3 tournament at Mount Vernon-Enola, the Lady Warhawks took command from the outset in the 59-44 victory over the Lady Pirates.

They led 35-10 at the half and held off a mild surge by Concord that cut the deficit to 10 in the final two minutes.

“We got a little lax and quit moving our feet on defense; they (the Lady Pirates) got to the free-throw line and made some shots,” said coach Freeman Isaacs. “It was like day and night. We were hot the first half and they were hot the second half.”

Jessica Harrison led the Lady Warhawks with 16 points.

In tournament Wednesday, Concord defeated the Mount Vernon-Enola boys, 63-55, and South Side Bee Branch eliminated the Guy-Perkins girls, 63-49.

In 3A Region 2 at Benton Harmony Grove in Haskell, Riverview’s girls defeated Mayflower, 57-33. Meg Meachum scored 19 points for the Lady Raiders (20-4). Tristan Lasker scored all 12 of her points in the second half to pace Mayflower, which finished the season 16-11.

In a 67-31 victory over Little Rock Catholic on Tuesday, Conway’s A.J. Burton punctuated his Senior Night 18 points, seven assists and three steals. Senior James Grubbs added 15 points and nine rebounds.

Demarian Johnson added nine points. Senior Jaylen Jones had eight points and four assists. Senior Deion Ball added five points. Senior Sean Criswell had five points.

The other Wampus Cat senior was Trent Walder.

The Cats (14-9, 6-7) will likely have the No. 5 seed from the Central Conference in next week’s state tournament at Conway.
