NORTH LITTLE ROCK — Conway will host both the initial rounds of the 7A state softball tournament on May 15-17 and and is a last-minute replacement to host the 7A state baskeball tournament on March 4-8.
Earlier this week, North Little Rock withdrew its bid (the sole bid in 7A) to host the basketball tournament because construction of new high school facilities at the old sight severely limits parking near the arena and caused some safety concerns.
When a school withdraws its bid to host a tournament, Arkansas Activities Association officials have the responsibility to assign a replacement site. Since the tournament was due to be hosted by a school in the Central Conference as part a rotation, Conway was selected.
“We’ll have to pull things together pretty fast but we’d like to host,” said Steve Daniels, CHS athletic director.
Some of the sites are voted on according to bids. However, the athletic directors in 7A submit only one bid for each tournment and the site rotates by year from West to Central.
It is also the Central Conference’s turn to host softball and baseball this year.
North Little Rock will host the state baseball tournament.
The AAA board awarded a bid to host the Region 3 Class A basketball tournament to Mount Vernon-Enola.
The 7A state volleyball tournament will be in Fayetteville next fall but the finals in all classifications will be at Hot Springs.
The championship games in spring sports will be played at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Hot Springs’ Summit Arena will host the basketball finals in all classifications.
Alma, which submitted the only bid in 5A, will host the early rounds of that classification’s state tournament.
