It's time for Battle at the Brier - in a new format

Posted: December 18, 2013 - 8:11pm

The restructured First Security Bank Battle at the Brier Classic opens today with four games, all in the interesting rivalry category.

Battle at Brier has a round-robin format this year with each team playing three games. Teams with the best records, including tie-breakers if needed, will receive the championship trophies.

Thursday’s games:

4 p.m., Girls, Vilonia vs Searcy.

5:30 p.m., Boys, Vilonia vs Searcy.

7 p.m., Girls, Greenbrier vs Guy-Perkins.

8:30 p.m., Boys, Greenbrier vs Guy-Perkins.

Vilonia and Searcy have a basketball history of some years, particularly when the two schools were members of the same conference.

For Thursday’s Battle at the Brier, Vilonia’s girls are again off to a strong start but may have their hands full with the Lady Lions of Searcy. Vilonia’s boys are filling major gaps left from last year’s team and have a new coach. Searcy is rated a team to watch in Class 6A.

The Greenbrier and Guy-Perkins girls and boys games are matching neighbors who seldom meet on the basketball court. But students and fans of both schools know each other well.

Winners of these games will acquire bragging rights in the neighborhood although Greenbrier competes in Class 5A and Guy-Perkins in Class 1A.
