Sonshine Academy to host new Mermaid Camp

Carson Grace Foster wears her monotail fin and mermaid leggings next to the Sonshine Academy swimming pool in Conway. The academy is set to host a Mermaid Camp for young girls this summer.

Sonshine Swim School recently announced a new addition to its schedule.

The school plans to host a Mermaid Camp, a week-long series of classes that combine experienced swim instruction with one-of-a-kind monotail fins and mermaid leggings.

The camp is open to girls between the ages of 8 and 12 who are already able to swim.

Sonshine Academy has offered swim lessons for more than a decade, but this is the first year that the academys swim school will be introducing a camp based on a new, popular national trend.

As far as we know, this is the very first mermaid program of its kind in the state, Britain McDonald, the camp instructor, said. Our staff noticed a growing number of viral internet videos featuring the mermaid tails, and we thought they would be a really fun addition to our regular summer swim lessons.

She said girls who participate in the camp will be able to keep their fins and leggings after the camp is finished.

Wed love to see our mermaids go on to use the swim techniques theyll learn at camp in their family pools or even at the lake or beach if they are strong, competent swimmers, McDonald said.

Currently, there are two Mermaid Camp sessions this summer, including June 5-8 and July 3-7. Tuition for a session is $158, which includes the cost of a child-size tail and leggings.
