JACKSON, Miss. — Undefeated Millsaps amassed 445 yards and rallied from a 10-point deficit in handing Hendrix’s young football program its second conference defeat, 48-37, Saturday at Harper-Davis Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was the Southern Athletic Association opener for the Majors (4-0). Hendrix fell to 2-2, 0-2.
The Warriors took a 17-7 lead in the second quarter on a 39-yard field goal by Steve Crenshaw, a 64-yard run by Dayton Winn and a 1-yard pass from Seth Peters to Travis McMahon after an interception by Caleb Shannon.
Millsaps then drove 67 yards for one score and scored on the final possession of the first half to go up 20-17.
Hendrix regained the lead on a 20-yard pass from Peters to McMahon that capped a 60-yard drive to open the second half. That lead weas short-lived after John McDowell returned the ensuing kickoff 95-yards for a touchdown and pushed the advantage. Millsaps pushed the advantage to 41-24 before Peters connected with Casey Caton for 38 yards to trim the deficit to 10 with 3:52 left in the third quarter.
The Majors responded on their next possession with a Watson 26-yard run for a touchdown to go up 48-31 and just 2:22 remaining to play. Peters connected with freshman Spencer Smith for a 36-yard touchdown with 1:15 left on the clock for the final score of the game.
Peters went 25-of-37 for 310 yards, an interception, and a season-high five passing touchdowns. Winn had six catches for 85 yards and a score and rushed nine times for 59 yards. Along with 75 yards on returns, Winn racked up 219 all-purpose yards. McMahon caught six passes for 65 yards and two scores and had three kick returns for 105 yards. Caton caught five passes for 72 yards and a TD.
Freshman defensive tackle Brett Asher had a season-best 11 tackles with two sacks. Redshirt freshman safety Reid Cone of Greenbrier had seven tackles and Shannon, Stephen Stearmna and Gray Stanton added five each. Hendrix will return home Saturday for a non-conference battle with Washington University at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium.
