A pair of freshman pitchers for the Hendrix College softball team threw shutouts in a doubleheader sweep of Rust College at Warrior Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Kayla Patton (3-1), from Little Rock, threw the eighth no-hitter in school history and struck out a program record 13 as the Warriors took game one 19-0 in five innings.
Ariel McDonald, of Texarkana, Texas, allowed one hit and just one walk while striking out 10 in a 13-0, five-inning win over the Lady Bearcats.
In the first game, Patton also drove in five runs with a double as the Warriors put up four runs in the first, five in the second and 10 in the third. DJ Sandidge went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, a triple and a stolen base.
In the nightcap, Kaitlyn Zamzow drove in five runs by going 3-for-3 with a double. Taylor Adams walked twice and was hit once and scored three times. Seana Corbin was hit twice and drew a walk, singled and scored two times. Patton added another base hit and two RBIs. Sandidge went 2-for-3 with an RBI and senior center fielder Sydney Copeland had two hits. Sophomore second baseman Katey Havens recorded a double, as did Shelby Anderson.
Hendrix will host Southern Athletic Association foe Sewanee in a four-game series beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
HENDRIX LACROSSE
The Hendrix College men’s lacrosse team opened Southern Athletic Association play with an 8-3 victory over Rhodes College at Warrior Field on Wednesday night.
The Warriors (3-5, 1-0) outshot the Lynx (4-4, 0-1) 51-22, including 25-13 in shots on goal, and had a 41-24 ground ball advantage.
Hendrix also committed season-lows in penalties (two for one minute) and turnovers with 14. The Warriors also won 10-of-15 faceoff opportunities and were 19-of-22 on clear attempts (86 percent).
Cameron Millstone took a school-record 23 shots, 11 of which were on goal, for five scores. The St. Louis, Mo. native also had a team-high seven ground balls and was 10-of-13 on faceoffs. Travis Rabun registered two assists and Preisler had a goal and assist for two points each. Joe Takacs recorded 11 saves in goal.
Hendrix will travel to Jackson, Miss. for a SAA match-up with Millsaps College on Saturday.
