The Hendrix College volleyball team will open the season this weekend at the UT Dallas Labor Day Tournament in Richardson, Texas. The Warriors will take on Hardin-Simmons and host UTD on Friday and will wrap up the tourney with Mary Hardin-Baylor and LeTourneau on Saturday.
Hardin-Simmons could be the toughest opponent for Hendrix this season, as the Cowgirls received votes in the first AVCA Division III Top 25 poll of the year.
Second-year head coach Ryan Meek returns 10 Warriors, including four starters back from last year’s team that won a school-record 17 games.
Leading the way is senior middle blocker Melissa Clement, who became the program’s first ever First Team all-Ccnference selection last year. The Rogers ranked second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and 31st in the nation with a .350 hitting percentage.
Senior Katie Bates, the Warriors’ starting right side hitter a year ago, moves to the left in 2012. The Austin, Texas native was third on the team last year with 236 kills, hitting .218 with 0.46 blocks per game.
Junior Zoe Calhoun returns as the starting setter for the third consecutive year. The Tucson, Ariz. native recorded 1,182 assists last year for a 9.16 per game average. She also recorded 81 kills and had 215 digs and a team-best 41 aces.
Hendrix will play 30 regular-season matches, 10 of which will be at home. After this weekend’s tournament at UTD, the Warriors will head back to Texas next week for a tournament hosted by UT Tyler.
Hendrix will begin competition in the newly-formed Southern Athletic Association at Rhodes on Sept. 12. The first home SAA match will be on Sept. 14 when Millsaps comes to Conway.
