The first scrimmage of the preseason for the University of Arkansas Bears was a mirror of the alternately overcast/sunny morning that followed a stormy beginning.

“I saw flashes on both sides of the ball,” said UCA coach Steve Campbell. “I saw a lot of good things and I saw a lot of things that will get you beat.”

The Bears went through a controlled scrimmge for an hour and a half exactly three weeks before their season opener at Texas Tech.

“We started out sluggishly on offense but the longer we went on, the playmakers started taking over and we made some plays,” Campbell said. “i think the 1’s scored on every possession but two. There were some good things on defense also.”

He said the biggest disappointments were some penalties, two on first down.

“We’ve got to eliminate those mistakes, particularly those that set you behind the chains right at the start,” he said. “We did well in our red zone offense and our coming-out offense. What we did in the middle of the field was the biggest problem.”

All the touchdowns, including a couple by Conway’s Jeff Anderson, came on short runs. Most were set up by receptions by Dezmin Lewis Desmond Smith, Courtney Whitehead and Damian Watts.

There were no major injuries.

The Bears will hold Media Day on Sunday evening then scrimmage again Saturday morning.
