The University of Central Arkansas had three first-team selections and placed nine players overall on the All Southland Conference Preseason Football Team.
Nine University of Central Arkansas football players were named Wednesday to the preseason All-Southland Conference teams, including three first-team selections.
Senior wide receiver Dezmin Lewis, senior offensive tackle Cole Caruthers and junior defensive end Jonathan Woodard were named to the first team. S
Senior receiver Damien Watts, senior offensive guard C.J. Simon, senior place-kicker Eddie Camara, senior noseguard T.J. Randall, junior cornerback Dillion Winfrey and sophomore return specialist Jatavious Wilson were second-team selections.
Lewis, from Mesquite, Texas, was UCA’s top receiver last season 50 receptions or 721 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns and was a second-team All-SLC selection. Caruthers, a 6-foot-4, 292-pound offensive tackle from Sugar Land, Texas, was a second-team All-SLC selection in 2013, helping the Bears average 453 yards of offense per game.
Woodard, a two-time All-Southland Conference selection from Brentwood, Tenn., led the league in sacks a year ago with eight and also had 10.5 tackles for loss. He was the SLC Freshman of the Year in 2012.
Watts, from Texarkana, Texas, caught 27 passes for 512 yards and five touchdowns a year ago. Camara, from Cedar Hill, Texas, moved into fourth place in career scoring at UCA with 242 points, and is third in career extra points (137) and field goals (35).
Wilson, a sophomore from Bastrop, La., ranked second in the SLC in kickoff returns last season with a 30.6-yard average. He returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, including a 93-yarder. Wilson also caught 41 passes for 409 yards and a pair of touchdowns as a wide receiver.
Randall, from Lee’s Summit, Mo., is a two-year starter on the defensive line who had 30 tackles, including 6.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks, last season. Simon, from Kingwood, Texas, is a two-year starter and has played in 34 games in the offensive line at UCA.
Winfrey, from Bryant, has 92 career tackles at cornerback for the Bears, including 56 last season, which was second on the team.
Defending champion Southeastern Louisiana led with 15 all-conference selections.
Nine offensive players and 11 defensive players return from last year’s all-conference squads.
Those returning all-conference players receive automatic spots on the preseason team.
The other 38 positions are determined by vote of the head coaches from the 11 football-playing schools.
