UCA downs Sam Houston in opening round of softball tourney

The University of Central Arkansas’ Kylee Studioso tossed a shutout as the sixth-seeded Bears took a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Sam Houston State on Thursday in the first round of the Southland Conference softball tournament at Hammond, Louisiana.

The Bears scored the only run of the game in the fifth on a single by Amy Gunnells, a sacrifice bunt by Hannah Stirton and an RBI single by Sam Forrest.

Forrest and Sara Bigej had two hits each for the Bears (25-32), who advanced to play second-seeded Northwestern State in the double-elimination tournament.

Studioso (17-11) struck out two and walked one in the four-hitter


Despite 14 hits, the Central Baptist College baseball team lost a slugfest, 12-8, to Oklahoma Christian Wednesday in the second round of the National Christian College Athletic Association’s Central Regional at Edmond, Oklahoma.

The Mustangs played a weather-delayed losers bracket game against Dallas Christian on Thursday.

Brandon Papera had two extra-base hits for CBC. He homered in the first inning, singled in the fifth and seventh innings, and doubled in the ninth inning.

Dylon Sturges got the win for Oklahoma Christian, pitching 1.1 shutout innings striking out four and allowing one hit.

Zach Sparks took the loss for CBC. He allowed six runs in three innings, walked one and struck out one.

Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports regional tournaments begin April 28

JACKSONVILLE – Student athletes from across Arkansas will gather at the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation Shooting Sports Complex in Jacksonville each weekend, beginning April 28, to take their shots at the regional and state championship tournaments of the Arkansas Youth Shooting Sports Program.
